Smokey Brights have been steadily releasing roadtrip rock out of the mossy Pacific Northwest for over a decade. The band, formed by friends working together at a pizza restaurant, has roots in Seattle’s DIY punk, songwriter, and psych scenes. Through the group’s five LP and three EP releases, you can hear Smokey Brights’ sonic branches stretching through 70’s prog, synthy new wave bops and fuzzy 90’s anthems, all rooted in storytelling and pop songcraft. You can also trace the lives and romance of songwriters Ryan Devlin and Kim West, who married a few years after the formation of the band. The couple’s entangled approach to songwriting and melody has yielded a remarkable amount of original, genre bending music. Nick Krivchenia’s steady, stylish drumming is the backbone of the Smokeys’ sound, while bassist Luke Rägnar adds low end bounce as well as a third harmony to Ryan and Kim’s melodies. The band’s music is heavily featured in the hit indie video game Pacific Drive. You can also hear their music on soundtracks for film, television, education, as well as the NPR Podcast Let the Kids Dance. Three of their releases have landed on iconic radio station KEXP’s top 90.3 records of the year. Their most recent full length, Dashboard Heat, ruminates on celestial forces, cars, childhood homes, light and hope, darkness and grief. Produced by Andy D. Park in exchange for Ryan painting his recording studio, the album sees the band sonically shooting for the solar system while staying true to their grounded take on songcraft that has made them a mainstay of the Northwest scene.
